This does not detect lying. It detects recognition. The examinee is instructed to deny familiarity with every item; if one of them is genuinely known to them, denying it takes measurably longer than denying the others. The difference is a few dozen milliseconds and is invisible to the person producing it.

The probe is the concealed item. The target is memorised in advance and is the only item answered “mine” — it exists to force the examinee to actually read every item rather than hammer one key.
These carry the whole test. They must be equally plausible, equally familiar, and the same length and format as the probe. If the probe stands out for any reason other than being known, the result is an artefact.
